Livi Tracker
Livi Tracker is a product strategy co-op project done during my internship in a team of 4. We are requested to propose a feature that can improve the customer engagement of Livi Bank’s future young customers. The project was ranked among all teams.

Initial Discovery
Livi has a strong Market acquisition, capturing over 100K users within the first year. However, most customers come for the high incentives provided by virtual banks rather than their product features.
So I tried to talk to and understand what the common issue found in the targeted young customers, the bubbles below are some interesting words from them:

Design Research
After a few rounds of conversation, our team set an initial direction on expense management.
We investigate the user experience with existing tracking methods, finding that most users have the intention to track, but the existing methods are not intuitive at all:

Interview > User Persona
To further clarify the behavior and needs coming from the future users of Livi Bank, I’ve talked to several existing customers and hypothesized that the students and young adults would be long-term users of Livi bank.

Hypothesis
“Young age users fail to track their expenses due to the lack of sustainable motivation 😢”

Early Direction
Collecting 3 major takeaways from the initial research and interview, I started to brainstorm design ideas driven by the findings.

1. Budgeting System
Allow users to set their budget and also provide references according to their age and income level to resolve their difficulties in planning. (Supported by AI)
2. Customize Categorization Function
Some users complain that banking apps often mistype expenses. I decided to provide an auto-record system with customized input.
3. Insightful Analytical Data
Data analytics are a basic function of a tracking system; however, we aim to make it more insightful and actionable for the users.

Wireframing
I've analyzed numerous expense tracking features and designed a preliminary wireframe, which was continuously tested and modified for achieving optimal user experience. Check out these screens from my wireframing process.

Design Iteration
After confirming the main pages flow with my team, I started to work on the detailed design and done iterations on the Hi-Fi prototype for 3-4 versions. The prototypes shown below are some examples of the iteration process.

Major Improvements

Highlight the Payment Status
-
The first version doesn't show the "payment Status" which confused the user to doubt whether the transaction is completed or not
-
It turns out that not every payment needs to be re-categorize. Placing the editing page into another sub-page may improve the UX

Simplify Category Box UI
-
Initially intended to show the percentage for better evaluation of their budgeting status
-
First design presents overloading information to users; some are not actionable at all (such as the percentage circular bar)

Separate Budget Type Flow
-
Originally I believed that showing 2 types of options at the same time gave users a better reference for their budgeting amount
-
According to feedback, the design doesn’t feel intuitive for users to take the next action

Final Delivery
After gathering and filtering all feedback from testing, I took around 3 days to modify the key flows, and here is the final production model. Due to the time constraints, I put most of my attention on the 3 main task flows.

Reflection
01
Though as a designer I think it will be more beneficial for the team to conduct more tests to improve the micro experience, the time limitation is indeed of the biggest considerations for this project. If I have the opportunity to work on similar projects, project timeline should be given more attention.
02
Designing for behavioral change is a challenging task. And our team adopted a visualization approach to motivate users to achieve their goals. However, if given more time, it is worth exploring to test out different strategies to facilitate the tracking behavior.
